Music Theory (Period 1)

1)  Note naming on the grand staff- Note identification.

2)  Key signatures- 7 sharps and flats. How to figure out all major keys using the cycle of 4ths and 5ths.

3)  Rhythmic dictation- Learning note values and identifying them.

4)  Meter- Time signatures and their values. Simple and complex meter will be covered.

5)  Music terms- Understanding musical terminology such as expression marks, technique marks along with repeats ands format.

6)  Ear Training- Solfege; Using syllables; Do-Re-Me-Fa-Sol-La-Ti-Do; Understand note relations to the key. 

7)  Melodic dictation- Hearing intervals played one note at a time .

8)  Harmonic dictation- Hearing 2 or more notes played together.

9)  Chords- Understanding how to build major and minor chords as well as hearing them.

10)  Basic species counterpoint- Writing a simple melody and harmony using guidelines of traditional counterpoint.

11)  Music analysis- Listening to music and understanding its structure.

12)  Free writing- Creating original music using all that has been taught up to this point.
